The purpose of the Learning Centres is to offer a place for children, teachers and the community to integrate technology into their learning, update skills and access information.
Inkscape at Te Whanau Tahi

Last term we spent some time out at Te Whanau Tahi teaching students how to use "inkscape" which is a free or "open-source" graphics application. In just a few short sessions students were beginning to produce a myriad of interesting and colourful works as pictured above. Inkscape is a vector graphics software which would typically be used to create posters or design logos. Being vector graphics means that it can be scaled to whatever size is required without losing quality. Comparable software to purchase is often very expensive so inkscape provides a very viable and usable alternative.

Above are the students who attended, Urupikia (far left) the teacher who organised the sessions for the students. and Priscilla Cowie (far right) a local artist who produced the graphics for Te Whata Raki and kindly gave her time to come out and inspire the students. Te Whata Raki utilises graphics produced in software very similar to inkscape. Here is some more of the work produced.

Learning Centres - still going strong!

Despite the unfortunate closure of South Library which included the South Learning Centre, the Programme Design and Delivery team have been very busy. Having no access to our Lab of 31 PCs at South (although very sad) has been in a way quite good as it has allowed us the opportunity to deliver far more "outreach" sessions where we venture out into the community to deliver programmes. We have been delivering sessions at schools, cafe's, a residential village and in most of the Libraries around our city.
