Other

Horizons Programmes in other learning areas could include some of the following topics.

Sibelius

Students are taught the basics of using the composition software, Sibelius, so that they can begin to write and print their own original music sheets.

Biodiversity - Bioblast

Students are given the opportunity to explore the biodiversity of the Heathcote River with experts from Lincoln University.  This “creepy, crawly” interactive session involves trapping insects, tracking small mammals and introduce students to the art of “kick-netting”.  Students design their own traps and record their “finds” online with the NZ Biodiversity Recording Network.

Sustainability

Students get involved in a 6-8 week programme that looks at an aspect of sustainability in New Zealand.

Vandalism

Students define what vandalism is; view local examples via a field trip and investigate the consequences from both sides of the fence. They develop possible solutions and ways they or the community can help reduce vandalism. Skills include digital photography, internet research; investigation and presentation of solutions.

Kids in enterprise

Students work as a team of young entrepreneurs in a quest to design and develop a real product. In 2009 students developed a promotional product that was used to help celebrate Christchurch City Libraries 150th birthday.
